ich habe das buch in wenigen tagen verschlungen und bin begeistert. sicher es ist unkonventionell - aber zumindest bei mir war es extrem erfolgreich.ich habe nichts anderes gelesen und nie einen EJB Server gesehen und dennoch mit über 90% bestanden.genau so sollten lehrbücher sein. eine referenz sieht wahrscheinlich anders aus, aber wer diese braucht sollte die spec nehmen.man muss sich halt einlassen auf ein zunaechst wild anmutendes schriftbild und viele comics und witze. das hat sinn, methode und unbestreitbar erfolg.die lektüre von hf ejb ist also uneingeschraenkt zu empfehlen.
The book helped me in passing the exam. However it was quite hard to learn from a book with such a confusing layout. During the first reading it is quite entertaining. But beware, if you have to lookup some forgotten facts. The index is poor and you have to skim through crazy cartoons and handwritten poorly organized notes. Frequently I gave up searching for some facts. So the 'head first' approach is definitely not for me. After passing the exam I gave tho book to someone else, because I didn't want to store such an optical cacophony on my bookshelf.
This book is meant for absolute beginners (to some extent java itself) and it is meant for people below 18 years old. The SCJP book by the same authors is excellent with full of finer details and subtle humor. But this book is just the opposite. I have patiently gone till 175 pages and am sure the information in the first 175 pages can be condensed to 20 pages. If you have hands on experience or know something about EJB, dont go for this book. I think instead of reading this ~650 pages Head first EJB, one can read 646pages EJB specification itself.
